Burton Salmon

The place name "Burton Salmon" is formed of two elements. The first originates in Old English and translates as "farmstead of the Britons" (Brettas, genitive Bretta) plus the word tūn, meaning "farmstead, village, settlement". The second element, "Salmon" is a manorial affix, derived from the name Salamone, that of a man who held lands in the area in the 13th century. Although not mentioned in the Domesday Book, the village was recorded as Brettona circa 1160, before the name of the estate holder was appended, and again as Burton Salamon in 1516.[3]

Brotherton

Brotherton is the birth place of Thomas of Brotherton, 1st Earl of Norfolk.

Harrogate

Hollins Hall has become the centre of an ever growing community, very close to Harrogate town centre.

Wetherby Road Ground

The town's club was brought back in 1935 as Harrogate Hotspurs. After World War II, the club was renamed as Harrogate Town and played in the West Yorkshire League. Harrogate Town joined the Yorkshire League again in 1957. They spent many years in the Yorkshire Leagues during the 1960s and 1970s, and then became a founding member of the new Northern Counties East Football League in 1982. The club was looking to climb the newly instated football pyramid and so began to improve their ground, installing floodlights. They played a friendly to mark the occasion against Leeds United, with Eddie Gray being the first to switch the lights on.

Tuel Lane Lock

During the time when the Rochdale Canal was abandoned, parts of the original line in Sowerby Bridge were filled in for a road widening scheme. In order to restore the canal, a tunnel was built under the road and a single deep lock provided upstream of, and in place of the former locks 3 and 4.
