Visitors are said to have been driven away due to the behaviour of a car clamper at the Changegate car park in Haworth. The car-clamping firm Carstoppers, who patrols the Changegate car park, was given the 'Dick Turpin' award by the RAC, for being the modern day equivalent of a highway robber. Complaints have been reported and motorists have been urged to park elsewhere.[6][7]
The park was formerly the grounds of Holden's house (Oakworth House) and garden. The house was partially destroyed in a fire in 1907, ten years after Sir Isaac's death in 1897. On the site of the house there is now a bowls or bowling green. The huge glasshouses are gone, and all that is left of the winter gardens are the caves and grottoes created by Holden.
Holden Park in Oakworth occupies the former grounds of a historic house owned by Sir Isaac Holden, an inventor who is said to have invented the lucifer match and revolutionised the process of wool carding. After Holden's death in 1897, his house, called Oakworth House, and its contents were sold at auction, and the house was all but destroyed by fire in 1907. All that remains of the original building is the portico.
Shipley railway station serves the town of Shipley in West Yorkshire, England.
Sir Titus died in 1876 and was interred in the mausoleum adjacent to the Congregational Church. When Sir Titus Salt's son, likewise Sir Titus Salt, died, Saltaire was taken over by a partnership which included Sir James Roberts from Haworth who had worked at the mill since the age of twelve, and who would travel to Russia each year, speaking Russian fluently. James Roberts came to own Saltaire, but chose to invest his money heavily in Russia, losing some of his fortune at the Russian Revolution. He endowed a Chair of Russian at Leeds University and bought the Brontë's Haworth Parsonage for the nation. He is mentioned in T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Roberts is buried at Fairlight.[3]
