Places of interest in Brigg, DN20
Brigg is home to Brigg Town Football Club, which formed in 1864, only seven years after the first, Sheffield F C, making it one of the oldest clubs in the world.
In later years financial constraints forced Hull City to allow Kwik Save and Iceland supermarkets to embed themselves into part of the stadium's structure. Parts of the ground were finally demolished in early 2008, more than five years after the last game was played there, though other parts remain due to the existence of the supermarkets.
In the past the ground was used mostly for rugby league matches and was the home stadium of Hull FC prior to the opening of KC Stadium. The main entrance was on Airlie Street, giving rise to Hull's nickname as 'the Airlie Birds'. When it closed, the stadium's capacity was 10,500 people. It hosted four matches in various Rugby League World Cups.
The bowl-shaped stadium contains a continuous single tier of seats with a second tier on the west side.[1] Its current capacity is 25,404.[1] The stadium accommodates fans of its two tenants, association football club Hull City A.F.C., which moved there from Boothferry Park,[3] and rugby league football club Hull FC, relocated from the Boulevard.[4] The ground also hosts international association football and rugby league football competitions[5][6][7] and acts as a venue for concerts by musical artists, such as Elton John[8] and The Who.[9]
A famous son of Flixborough is Sir Edmund Anderson, who was Chief Justice of the Common Pleas during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and tried Mary, Queen of Scots.
