There is a Lawn Tennis Club with artificial and all weather courts in Main Street. As of 2010 the Men's 1st and second team play in Division One of the Tyke Petroleum Tennis League and the 3rd team play in Division Six. The Ladies 1st team also compete in the Ladies sectino of the same League, with the 1st team playing in Division One, the 2nd team in Division Three and the 3rd team in Division Three as of 2010. They also enter five teams in the Mixed Section in Divisions One, Two, Six Eight and Eleven.[18]
According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 181. Prior to 1996 it had been part of the Harrogate district. Recent developments have increased the population to a larger figure though the actual figure is not known. There are approximately sixty houses in Hessay and about 15 have been built in the last 4 years.
Brigg has been a thriving market town for centuries, serving the largely rural villages on both sides of the river with a corn exchange and livestock market. Road communications were good with the old Roman road Ermine Street passing not far away. There are many old coaching inns, most notably The Angel on the route from Lincoln via Caenby Corner to the Humber Estuary (The Angel now is home to Brigg Town Council). The Ancholme also gave access to the Humber Estuary and the port of Kingston upon Hull.
The prosperity of the medieval market town and centre of the Swaledale wool industry greatly increased in the late 17th and 18th centuries with the burgeoning lead mining industry in nearby Arkengarthdale. It is from this period that the town's attractive Georgian architecture originates, the most notable examples of which are to be found on Newbiggin and in Frenchgate[citation needed].
