Of a population of approximately 320,000 at the beginning of World War II, some 192,000 were made homeless as a result of bomb destruction or damage. More than 1,200 people died in air raids on the city and some 3,000 others were injured.[18]
In the first four decades of the 18th century, Sir Richard Ellys of Nocton formed a collection of books which eventually went to Blickling Hall in Norfolk by inheritance in the 1740s, though most of the books were in fact kept in London. They form the core of the great library of some 12,500 books, which is now in the care of the National Trust.
The more modern areas of the village have developed down the steep hill towards Lincoln. The Viking Way enters the village from the north on Far Lane and passes south along High Street then briefly along Millers Road.
A large housing development was constructed at virtually the same time on the A15 Sleaford direction. The effect of these developments was to virtually double the size of the village.
The two main local football teams ? the Legionnaires and Sleaford Town F.C. - played for many years on Boston Road Recreation Ground. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of several local Councillors (including the late Cllr John Pratt) to provide a new pavilion, the wooden pavilion finally gave way to rot and decay in 2004, and their new Stadium opened, located a little further down Boston Road just outside the town's curtilage in March 2007.
