Places of interest in Evesham, WR11
Offenham was founded as a monastic grange and medieval deer park by the Benedictine Abbots of Evesham Abbey in the 13th century, the old grange stood where Court Farm now stands. The grange was established to enclose the large flocks of sheep needed by the Abbots to trade wool with Flanders. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries the grange became crown property and Henry VIII granted both Offenham and Evesham to Philip Hoby, one of his English Ambassadors. The grange and park later became the property of the Hazelwood family until the mid-18th century when it was sub-divided, by this time the village had formed an adequate farming and market gardening community.[1]
On the other hand, the year of the consecration derives from the grant of the first privilege to the Abbey from Pope Constantine "written in the seven hundred and ninth year of our Lord?s incarnation."[6] Ecgwine returned from Rome bearing this charter, which was apparently read out by Archbishop Berhtwald at a council of the whole of England held at Alcester[7], although that meeting was probably fictitious[8]. Thomas of Marlborough records that, in accordance with the apostolic command, a community of monks was then established[9] (meaning the foundation can also be dated to 709):
Schools in Evesham follow the three-tier education model of first school (ages 5?10), middle school (ages 10?13), and high school (ages 13?18) adopted by Wychavon District Council 1974 and completed by 1977. Twelve first (primary) schools which include state non-denominational schools as well as Church of England and Roman Catholic school feed four middle schools which in turn send their pupils to complete their secondary education at Evesham High School and Prince Henry's High School. Further education is provided by South Worcestershire College (previously known as Evesham and Malvern Hills College)[35] which caters mainly for students studying at the NVQ and BTEC level or undertaking practical vocational courses.[36]
The village is effectively a commuter town for professionals employed in Birmingham and Coventry. Lapworth has a railway station, originally called Kingswood, on the Birmingham to London line, which is partly responsible for its size, although most commuters today drive to their places of work. The station name was changed to Lapworth to avoid confusion with Kingswood station in Surrey. Lapworth also contains a historic church as well as the National Trust sites of Baddesley Clinton and Packwood House.
A landmark water pumping station, one of the first of its kind, was opened at Ocker Hill in 1784 to re-circulate water from the nearby Walsall Canal. The Ocker Hill Tunnel Branch brought water to the pumps through a tunnel. It was then pumped up the Ocker Hill Branch of the Birmingham Canal (the Wednesbury Oak Loop). It was in use for 164 years, finally closing in 1948. However, it was not demolished until 1960, when the site was cleared for the development of Bolton Court, a development of three multi-storey tower blocks as well as two maisonette blocks. Since the demolition of the nearby cooling towers, Bolton Court has been Ocker Hill's most recognisable and distinctive landmark. The two masionette blocks were demolished in 2007. Two of the three tower blocks remain in place, the first was demolished in 1990, but they too have been earmarked for demolition which should take place in 2011 subject to clearance of the remaining tenants.
