Merry Hill, Wolverhampton

Merry Hill is a suburb of Wolverhampton, West Midlands and a ward of Wolverhampton City Council. It is situated in the south-west of the city, bordering South Staffordshire and the Tettenhall Wightwick, Park, Graiseley and Penn wards. It forms part of the Wolverhampton South West constituency.

Tettenhall

Tettenhall has an old church, St Michael and All Angels. An exact founding date for it is not known, though records of a fourteenth century dispute over village land tell us that the church had been founded during the reign of King Edgar - some point between 959 and 975AD[5]. The Domesday Book of 1086 informs us that before the Norman conquest, Tettenhall was held by three Englishmen - Hunta, Wulfstan and Godwin. Of course as with the majority of England, post conquest, William the Bastard gave the land to his followers.

Wightwick Manor

The house is one of the four houses of Coppice Performing Arts School, along with Chillington, Moseley and Bantock.

Cannock

Cannock was called Chenet in the Domesday Book of 1086. It was called Chnoc c.1130, Cnot in 1156, Canot in 1157, and Canoc in 1198. Cannock is probably Old English cnocc meaning 'hillock', modified by Norman pronunciation by the insertion of a vowel to Canoc. The name may refer to Shoal Hill, north-west of the town.[4]

Rumer Hill Junction

Rumer Hill Junction (grid reference SJ991090) was a canal junction on the Cannock Extension Canal where the Churchbridge Branch left to join the Hatherton Canal. The junction, along with the northern section of the canal was abandoned in 1963.[1] The Churchbridge Branch and Rumer Hill Junction were subsequently obliterated by opencast mining.[2]
