The GWR (later British Railways) London to Birmingham main line (the Chiltern Main Line as it is now called) passed three miles southwest of Southam and the nearest station was at Harbury (Southam Road & Harbury). Today, the closest railway station is at Leamington Spa.
At the beginning of the World War II, the electronics company EKCO moved part of its operations from Southend-on-Sea to Cowbridge House, to avoid the danger of bombing.[4] The company established a Shadow factory, to produce the essential new technology radar equipment. The factory continued production after the war, renamed TMC and part of Philips it eventually became part of AT&T. The site was in use as offices until 2004 when the owners, Lucent Technologies moved their operations to Swindon.
Brokenborough is a village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 173. The village is situated very close to the county boundary with Gloucestershire (which follows the disused path of the Fosse Way), and is two miles north of Malmesbury in Wiltshire, and four miles south of Tetbury in Gloucestershire. The Tetbury Avon, also known as the Ingleburn, flows to the west of the village.
King John added further to the castle, and Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall spent substantial sums on it: during the 13th century it gained two further walls and ditches. William IX, Count of Poitiers died at the castle in 1156, as did Joan of Kent who died at the castle in 1387. Catherine of Valois, widow of Henry V, was given the castle and here her relationship with Owen Tudor developed. The castle contained St Nicholas's College, established by Miles Crispin. The college trained choirboys, including the poet Thomas Tusser.
Wallingford Bridge is a medieval road bridge over the River Thames in England which connects Wallingford and Crowmarsh Gifford, Oxfordshire (historically in Berkshire until 1974 reorganization). It crosses the Thames on the reach between Cleeve Lock and Benson Lock. The bridge is 900 feet long and has 22 arches but most traffic now crosses Winterbrook Bridge, built as part of the by-pass to the south of the town in 1993.
