2002 History is made when Champion jockey Tony McCoy became the winning-most National Hunt jockey of all time with his victory aboard Mighty Montefalco, marking his 1700th win.
In UK railway history, Spath is notable as the site of the first automatic (i.e. train-operated) level crossing in the United Kingdom, which came into operation on 5 February 1961.[1] The railway has now been dismantled, the road which crossed it via the automatic crossing is now gated and only leads to a farm and there is no remaining visible sign of the crossing.
Excavations on the main site have revealed that a large medieval hospital operated on exactly the same site from the thirteenth century until the 1580s.
The town has an extensive number of both primary and secondary schools in the state sector. There is also Newcastle-under-Lyme School, an independent school established in the 17th century whose alumni includes T. E. Hulme, John Wain and William Watkiss Lloyd. There is also a special school located in the town called Blackfriars School.
Newcastle-under-Lyme is a local government district with borough status in Staffordshire, England.
