Places of interest in Craven Arms, SY12
This was a motte and bailey castle which was probably founded by Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury on a prominent hill to the east of the town, overlooking the Mere, soon after the Norman conquest. It was given to the Peverel family by Henry I but taken back by Henry II who granted it to David, son of Owain Gwynedd, Prince of Wales in about 1177. It alternated between the English and Welsh crowns until the 1240s when it passed to the le Strange family whose origins were in Knockin, Shropshire.
The Minister proposed an extension of 12,000 acres (49 km²) in 1968 (taking in the historic area of Ironbridge Gorge), which saw objections and a public inquiry take place. The Dawley New Town (Designation) Amendment (Telford) Order was made on 29 November 1968, extending the New Town area by 10,143 acres (41 km²) of "land lying within the urban districts of Oakengates and Wellington and the rural districts of Shifnal and Wellington".[6] This Order also renamed the new town Telford, after the Scottish-born civil engineer Thomas Telford who, in 1787, became Surveyor of Public Works for Shropshire. Other suggested names at the time were Dawelloak and Wrekin Forest City.
Radcliffe Power Station was a coal-fired power station in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, England.
Outwood Colliery was a coal mine in Outwood, near Stoneclough in Greater Manchester, England. Originally named Clough Side Colliery,[1] it opened in the 1840s and was the largest colliery in the area[2] It was owned by Thomas Fletcher & Sons, Outwood Collieries, Stoneclough, Manchester.[3] There were two pits. Coal was transported by a tramway to a depot west of Outwood Road, in Radcliffe, and also by tramway through Ringley Wood to the nearby Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal. A railway sidings from the nearby East Lancashire Railway Line was located nearby, from the northern end of the colliery. In its heyday the colliery employed over 2000 workers.[4] Outwood Colliery was noted for its Trencherbone Coal.[5]
Outwood Viaduct is a Grade II listed railway viaduct crossing the River Irwell in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester. It no longer carries trains, and after a period of disuse was restored and opened to the general public as part of a footpath.
