Places of interest in Ledbury, HR8
Ledbury is an ancient borough, dating back to the Domesday Book, where it was recorded as Liedeberge, and returned members to Parliament in the reign of Edward I. Ledbury probably takes its name from the River Leadon, on which it stands. The Old English berg (hill) has been added to the river name.
After the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror granted the manor of Bridgnorth to Roger de Montgomerie. The town itself was not created until 1101, when Robert de Belesme, the son of Roger de Montgomerie, moved from Quatford, constructing a castle and church on the site of the modern-day town. The castle's purpose was to defend against attacks from Wales.[2] On Robert's attainder, in 1102 the town became a royal borough. Later, in 1546, the town was incorporated by James I.
The district was formed on 1 April 1974, under the Local Government Act 1972. It was a merger of the Bridgnorth Rural District, Much Wenlock Municipal Borough and nearly all of the Shifnal Rural District.
During the Civil War, Bridgnorth was one of the Midlands' main Royalist strongholds and in 1642 many Royalist troops were garrisoned there. In 1646, Cromwell?s Roundheads arrived with orders to take Bridgnorth for the Parliamentarians from the garrison led by Sir Robert Howard.[2] Following a three week siege, Cromwell was successful and he ordered that the castle be demolished. By 1647 little of the structure remained.[1] The Parliamentarians left it much as it is today, the stone from the castle being taken and used to repair the town's damaged buildings.
Wadborough appears in Domesday Book as Wadberge, meaning Old English wad "woad" beorg "hill". Woad dye production was usually carried out at some distance from towns (Wadborough is about four miles from Pershore) because of the offensive smells produced.
