In 2004, the school began to offer the International Baccalaureate programme of study in its sixth form years, as a parallel alternative to the A-Level programme that was already being offered. This led to an increase in the number of pupils attending the school from overseas countries such as Ukraine, Belgium, Canada, Germany, France, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, Russia and the Czech Republic.
Prior to local government reorganisation in April 1974 it was part of the Municipal Borough of Colwyn Bay, but the reorganisation established it as a separate parish (known as a community in Wales), whose population at the 2001 census was 7,626.[1] It hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1941. It also harbours the 3rd Colwyn Bay (Old Colwyn) Scout Group headquarters and is home to the area's comprehensive school, Ysgol Bryn Elian
Colwyn Bay has three secondary schools - one private and two state. Eirias High School is in Eirias Park and Ysgol Bryn Elian is in Old Colwyn. Ysgol Bryn Elian mainly serves Old Colwyn and Eirias High School mainly serves Colwyn Bay, Rhos on Sea and Penrhyn Bay. Rydal Penrhos is a private school, which is on multiple sites in the town.
The Main stand is the oldest stand at Prenton Park, having been built in the 1960s. A two tier stand, it is generally divided into 3 main sections. The lower tier consists of the Bebington End paddock (capacity 1,122 + 28 disabled spaces) and the Town End paddock (capacity 1,209), either side of the halfway line. The upper tier is simply referred to as the Main Stand (capacity 3,598). The future of the Main stand is under discussion as the 40-year-old structure is becoming increasingly expensive to repair.[5]
Mayer Hall, Bebington Village, was formerly an art gallery built by Joseph Mayer, a Liverpool Businessman. It is now a community resource and still boasts many of its original features.
