The town had its own railway station on the Bristol and Exeter Railway from 1 May 1843 until 5 October 1964.[4] It was here that extra locomotives were attached to heavy trains to help them up the incline to Whiteball Tunnel on their way south. The railway from Penzance to London, and also to Bristol and the North, continue to pass through the town, but no trains stop. The nearest stations are Taunton[36] and Tiverton Parkway. A campaign was started to reopen the station in 2009.[37]
Bridgwater railway station serves Bridgwater in Somerset, England. It is on the Bristol to Taunton Line and is operated by First Great Western. Originally built to the designs of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the station is now a Grade II listed building.
Much of the site was built on in the 1720s to create the Georgian Castle Street. Parts of the castle wall, water gate and undercroft still survive.[4]
Yeovil's reputation as a centre of the aircraft and defence industries lived on into the 21st century despite attempts at diversification, and the creation of numerous industrial estates, the principal employer is the aviation group AgustaWestland. This firm was created through the acquisition of Westland Helicopters by Agusta in 2000.[41] In January 1986 the proposed sale of Westland to the American Sikorsky Aircraft group led to the Westland affair, a crisis in the Thatcher government, the resignation of Michael Heseltine as Secretary of State for Defence[42] and the resignation two weeks later of the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Leon Brittan, after his admission of leaking of a governmental law officer's letter which harshly criticised Mr Heseltine.[43]
It originally met in the Second Kingswood School, which was built in the first half of the 18th century for George Whitefield and John Cennick after a separation occurred between them and John Wesley. The former school building was expanded to a large size, and is a grade I listed building,[1]. It is now roofless and derelict after an arson attack.[2]
