Places of interest in Minehead, TA24
This site is located in the north-east of the Exmoor National Park within a few miles of the Bristol Channel near the village of Dunster, and is notified for nationally important lowland dry heath, dry lowland acid grassland, wood-pasture with veteran trees and ancient semi-natural oak woodland habitats. The fauna of the lowland heath includes a nationally rare butterfly the Heath fritillary (Mellicta athalia). The assemblage of beetles associated with the veteran trees is of national significance.[1]
Yeovil is home to Ivel Barbarians Rugby Club. Ivel was formed in 1995 by the merger of Yeovil Rugby Club and Westlands Rugby Club.[69]
Yeovil Aerodrome has a CAA Ordinary Licence (Number P482) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction as authorised by the licensee (Westland Helicopters Limited)[2].
There is generally a two-hourly service Mon-Sat (eight each way in total); toward Bristol Temple Meads northbound, and Weymouth southbound. Three trains each way call on Sundays all year, plus a further two in the summer.
On the northern side of the park is the site of the old village at Cwmcidi (meaning Valley of the Black Dog), which came into existence before the middle of the 13th century. In 1622, Cwmcidi contained 5 houses bordering "Comkedye Street", interspersed with a number of tofts (dwelling sites) plus three scattered dwellings. By 1812, there remained only three cottages and a farmhouse. The cottages were finally swept away in the 1840s when the area was landscaped by the Romilly family to form Porthkerry Park. The name - although slightly anglicised - lives on in the area, in the form of a nearby public house, The Cwm Ciddy.
