Local traders, unhappy that visitors were not coming as far as the centre of the town, began the construction of a new pier closer to the main streets. Opened in 1904, and known as the Grand Pier, it was originally planned to be 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long.[20] Further development occurred after World War I, with the Winter Gardens and Pavilion in 1927,[21] the open air pool, with its arched concrete diving board,[22] and an airfield dating from the inter-war period. Art Deco influences can be seen in much of the town's architecture from this period.
The new line and station were opened on 1 March 1884.[1] This was not the end of the old branch line as for several years a trolley was taken along the old tracks to collect mail from a postal train at the old Junction station each night.[3] There was also a need to serve the town's gas works until 1972, and this was done along a short section of the old branch including the level crossing over Devonshire Road which had a roundabout built on it after the remainder of the branch became Winterstoke Road.
