Bridgwater Castle

Bridgwater Castle was a substantial structure built in Old Red Sandstone, covering a site of 8 or 9 acres (32,000 to 36,000 m˛). A tidal moat, up to 65 feet (20 m) wide in places,[3] flowed about along the current streets of Fore Street and Castle Moat, and between Northgate and Chandos Street. Unusually, the main entrance opposite the Cornhill was built with a pair of adjacent gates and drawbridges. In addition to a keep, located at the south-east corner of what is now King Square, documents show that the complex included a dungeon, chapel, stables and a bell tower. Built on the only raised ground in the town, the castle controlled the crossing of the town bridge. A 12 feet (4 m) thick portion of the castle wall and water gate can still be seen on West Quay,[1] and the remains of a wall of a building that was probably built within the castle can be viewed in Queen Street. The foundations of the tower forming the north-east corner of the castle are buried beneath Homecastle House.

Bridgwater railway station

The station buildings have survived and are kept in reasonable repair. The booking office, although modernised, retains a rare early ticket counter.

Bradford-on-Avon railway station

Regular services are provided by First Great Western to Bath, Bristol Temple Meads and either Gloucester or Cardiff Central in the north and Weymouth, Southampton and Portsmouth in the south.

Bradford on Avon

The original parish church has a dedication to the Holy Trinity, and is located near the town centre by the river. It is Norman in origin, and it is possible that the chancel was built over the remains of an older church. Several chapels were added on the north side, and the wall in between was later opened up and the chapels now form the north aisle. The tower and spire was built around 1480, replacing an older one, and the south wall was largely rebuilt in the 19th century.[4] The church has a ring of eight bells, with the tenor (heaviest bell) weighing 30cwt (1.5 tons).
