Places of interest in Newnham, GL14
Because of Newnham's location on the Severn, the Ancient Romans built three roads through the location, where they forded the river. The Anglo-Saxons established a permanent settlement, the Normans fortified it against the Welsh, and in medieval times it became a major port with links around Great Britain and Ireland. In 1171, Henry II of England staged an invasion of Ireland from Newnham. One account claimed that he set sail with 400 ships and 5,000 men, which suggests its importance as a port. For a time Newnham was the most successful Gloucestershire town west of the Severn. Its role as a port and trading hub declined, however, rapidly with the 1827 opening of the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Matron Eva Luckes of The London Hospital lived in Newnham.
The Abbey is now owned by the Watkins Family, the sibling will then hopefully pass the beautiful location onto the next generation to preserve the ancient building. The village that it is located in, is a picturesque part of the county. Everything about the building is unique and well worth visiting.
Originally a Saxon hall, it was then converted to a Norman hall, evolving into a substantial medieval manor house by the time it was eventually replaced with a Jacobean house in 1612. Littledean hall is reputedly one of the most haunted houses in England, with ghosts reportedly seen in the house and grounds. A particularly frightening place, it is said, is the blue bedroom located on the left of the upstairs hall. Two brothers supposedly killed each other in a swordfight over a lady, and a noise of a swordfight can often be heard, as well as numerous accounts of a white lady being seen.
Under the 1938 Fire Brigades Act, the UK Government set up a training centre[2] at Saltdean near Brighton in 1941, to train National Fire Service personnel. With the return to local authority control after World War II, the British government decided to standardise the way in which the fire service worked. The college at Saltdean became too small and the Home Office opened the Senior Staff College at Wotton House, Dorking in Surrey in 1949, to train senior officers from all over the country. On 4 June 1966, they decided to do the same for the lower ranks and established the Fire Service College at Moreton. The College was built on a disused RAF wartime airfield about 3 km outside the village of Moreton in Marsh.
Cheltenham is a hub for National Express coach services. There are local bus services across the area, but some are infrequent. The best sources of information are the Gloucestershire County Council website,[16] or local tourist information centres.
