Places of interest in Shaftesbury, SP7
In 2001 Madonna and Guy Ritchie bought and occupied Ashcombe House, a Georgian manor house in Wiltshire, about five kilometres to the east of Melbury Abbas. They caused some controversy when they tried to close public byways which ran through their land. They were subsequently divorced in November 2008.
Shaftesbury was a parliamentary constituency returning two members from 1296 to the Reform Act of 1832, when it was reduced to one, and in 1884 the separate constituency was abolished.
The Witney Railway opened in 1861, linking the town to Yarnton where the line joined the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. In 1873 the East Gloucestershire Railway opened linking Witney with Lechlade and Fairford. The Great Western Railway operated services on both lines and eventually took them over. In 1962 British Railways closed the EGR completely and withdrew passenger trains from the Witney Railway. In 1970 BR closed the Witney Railway completely and it was dismantled.
The museum was subsidised by Oxfordshire County Council.[6] At the end of the summer season on 31 August 2009 the council withdrew funding and the museum closed. A new charitable trust intends to reopen the museum in April 2010.[7][8][9]
New goods facilities were opened on the junction side of Locking Road in 1862; the first goods dispatched were three truck loads of flower pots from the nearby Royal Pottery. On 20 July 1866 a large passenger station was opened adjacent to this, which allowed the closure of Brunel's 1841 terminus and the elimination of the Locking Road level crossing, although a second one across Devonshire Road remained. The branch was given a second track at the same time.
