Places of interest in Yelverton, PL3
Mannamead is a suburb of Plymouth in the English county of Devon. It was an affluent Victorian and early Edwardian suburb with wide avenues such as Seymour Road, grand villas and Thorn Park referred to in Pevsner. Much of it has now been given over to shared student accommodation and care homes. It has a solid late Victorian Anglican church, a small row of shops and a frequent bus service along one of the city's busiest and principal commuting routes.
The houses compete against each other throughout the year in a range of activities for the Forsyth Cup.
The gallery also includes items by local artist Robert Lenkiewicz and work by artists of the 19th century Newlyn School, the influential 20th century St. Ives group of painters, and the Camden Town Group. Other artists represented are Edgar Degas, Edward Burne-Jones, John William Waterhouse, Claude Lorrain, Terry Frost, J M W Turner, John Brett, John Everett Millais, Benjamin Robert Haydon and Samuel Prout. The latter two painters were born locally.
Since 1973 Plymouth has been supplied water by South West Water. Prior to the 1973 take over it was supplied by Plymouth County Borough Corporation.[132] Before the 19th century two leats were built in order to provide drinking water for the town. They carried water from Dartmoor to Plymouth. A watercourse, known as Plymouth or Drake's Leat, was opened on 24 April 1591 to tap the River Meavy.[133] The Devonport Leat was constructed to carry fresh drinking water to the expanding dockyards at Devonport. It was fed by three Dartmoor rivers: The West Dart, Cowsic and Blackabrook. It seems to have been carrying water since 1797, but it was officially completed in 1801. It was originally designed to carry water to Devonport Dockyard, but has since been shortened and now carries water to Burrator Reservoir, which feeds most of the water supply of Plymouth.[134] Burrator Reservoir is located about 5 miles (8.0 km) north of the city and was constructed in 1898 and expanded in 1928.[135]
In 2009 with introduction of roughly eighteen new species from Barbados, West Indies, the aquarium is expected to be making one of the largest ever shipments of live fish into the UK.[2]
