Longdown is a small village in the parish of Holcombe Burnell near Exeter in Devon. It is notable for being mentioned in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic Sherlock Holmes novel The Hound of the Baskervilles.
The Fairwater Leat, fed by the springs at Rydon, superseded the Honeywell Spring as the established water supply in the Middle Ages and also supplied the power for three mills. A drought is said to have given rise to the annual Ram Roasting fair. According to legend there was insufficient water to baptise a child so a ram was sacrificed to the gods of the local spring. Water sprang forth and a ram has been roasted ever since at the fair, held nowadays on the late May bank holiday. Whit Tuesday was the traditional day for the fair but it was switched to Whit Monday in the early 1950s to fit in with school holidays and the later switch to the late May bank holiday was made for the same reason when the bank holiday was fixed as the last Monday in May.
Newton Abbot has a racecourse nearby situated in the parishes of Kingsteignton and Teigngrace and has one country park, Decoy. Newton Abbot's holds the historic Cheese and Onion Fayre, originally held from the 5th to 7 November in honour of Saint Leonard, but now celebrated at the beginning of September. The town grew very rapidly in the Victorian era as it was home to the South Devon Railway locomotive works. This later became a major steam engine shed and was retained to service British Railways diesel locomotives, although it has now closed and is the site of an industrial estate.
The racecourse has a variety of corporate meeting, conference rooms, suites and private boxes as well as cafeterias and bars, and two restaurants: ?The Winning Post? and ?The Paddock?. Many of the rooms have views across the racecourse, whilst there is parking in and around the venue for 5,000 cars.
Exminster's amenities include a surgery, pharmacy, a village shop, a convenience store, several estate agents, a golf course, a hairdresser, as well as a community facility (The Westbank) which incorporates a gym, an IT suite with web access, and daytime family and toddlers' groups. Exminster also has a primary school; several parks for children including a skate park; and three pubs ? The Stowey Arms, The Royal Oak and The Swan's Nest. The Topsham and Exminster Brewery, which produces Ferryman Ale, is located at a former RAF GCI (Ground Controlled Interception) radar station in the midst of the Exminster Marshes RSPB reserve.
