St Luke's is also home to the Children's Health and Exercise Research Centre (CHEREC). The Centre, part of the School of Sport and Health Sciences, was awarded the Queen's Anniversary Prize for higher education in recognition of its eminence in paediatric physiology. This made CHEREC the first receiver of the award in sport science research.
On a hill overlooking the Exe estuary at the north-west side of the village is the former Devon County Asylum (a "lunatic asylum") which was designed by Charles Fowler and opened in July 1845. It featured a central administration block with six radiating arms and had a capacity of around 800 beds. The hospital closed in the mid-eighties when it was known as Exminster Hospital [3]. After years of neglect, the surrounding land was developed for housing and the grade II listed hospital was converted to apartments and town houses and is now known as Devington Park.[4]

Its church is 15th century, with an ancient cross. It has many battlements, pinnacles and gargoyles. In the year 1001 the village is said to have been burned down by Danish invaders.
Commansder Lowder, however, had a son, also named John (1781 -1829) who practised as a gentlemen architect in Bath. Although only 17 years of age when A La Ronde was built, it is entirely feasible that the younger Lowder designed the house. In 1816 he went on to design the unusual Bath and District National School (demolished 1896), a 32-sided building with wedge-shaped classrooms. A La Ronde may reasonably be interpreted as an early prototype for the much larger later project.[1]
