Places of interest in Liskeard, PL14
Coombe (Cornish: Komm) is a settlement in Cornwall, United Kingdom. It is situated one mile (1.6km) southwest of Liskeard[1].
Addington is a residential area of north-east Liskeard, in Cornwall, England at OS grid ref SW260650.
Before 1894 Ivybridge was made up of four neighbouring parishes: Harford - 2 miles (3.2 km) north; Ugborough - 2.5 miles (4.0 km) east; Ermington - 2 miles (3.2 km) south and Cornwood - 3 miles (4.8 km) northwest.[11] All the parishes? boundaries met at the Ivy Bridge. In 1836 the Parish of Saint John was formed (the name of the church at the time, which was named after John the Evangelist). The parish represented the small central area of Ivybridge known at present. In 1894 St John's parish became a parish church for the newly created parish of Ivybridge.[3] 83 years later the village and civil parish of Ivybridge became a town in 1977. Its local government district has been the South Hams since 1 April 1974 and its county constituency has been South West Devon since 1997.
Truro prospered greatly during the 18th and 19th centuries.[citation needed] Industry flourished thanks to improved mining methods and higher prices for tin, and the town soon became the place to be for wealthy mine owners. Elegant Georgian and Victorian townhouses were built?such as those seen today on Lemon Street, named after the mining magnate and local MP Sir William Lemon?and Truro became the centre for high society in the county, being mentioned as "the London of Cornwall".[4]
It is likely that the church of Kenwyn is very early and in fact the mother church of Truro. The original dedication is doubtfully St Keyne (Keynwen is the earliest form of the name which would be 'Keyn' and -wen' (white/blessed): by the 15th century it was assumed to be St Kenwyn (no medieval records have it with the prefix 'Saint'). Subsequently the dedication was attributed to St Cuby.[2] The manor of Kenwyn was held in the 12th century by Richard de Luci after it had been confiscated by the King. Apparently the borough of Truro was established by the lord in part of the manor and this was the beginning of Truro as a town, then called Triuereu.[3] In Domesday Book the manor of Kenwyn appears as Tregavran (in later usage Trehaverne). It was in the possession over many centuries of the families of Lantyan, Beville and Grenville, and Enys.[4]
