Early Lords of the Manor included Edward the Confessor (1042) and the de Spenser family (13th century). Numerous 500-plus year old buildings are still to be seen, and the village still very much retains its own atmosphere amid much commonland and greenery.
Byfleet is mentioned in chapter twelve of The War of the Worlds (1898) by H. G. Wells, viz;
A canopy costing £2.8 million has been built between the station and the main shopping area of the town. It stretches from the railway station entrance (town, platform 1, side) to Albion House and includes landscaping of the area which, along with the canopy, creates a new entrance to the town from the railway station.[16]
The site closed on 2 May 2005 and reopened on 25 March 2006, with a new all-weather Polytrack synthetic track and floodlighting to facilitate racing in all conditions and at all light levels.
Rivermead was originally two islands, the other part being Swan's Rest. However they are now completely joined.
