In 2008 further flooding contributed to the death of a 17 year old youth who drowned in a culvert.[44]
The original Manor House was a Cotswold stone building dating from the middle of the 13th century.[3] It originally comprised four ranges built around a courtyard. Of these the 13th century kitchen and part of the hall survive from one range and the dairy incorporates remains of one of the other ranges. The other two ranges have been lost, but traces or foundations of both of them survive.[4] In the 13th century the Manor had a large fishpond, but since 1984 part of the site of the pond has been covered by modern houses.[4]
Newbury is home to one of England's major racecourses Newbury Racecourse, which celebrated its centenary in 2005. The most prestigious race in the calendar is the Hennessy Gold Cup which normally takes place in late November.
Greenham Lock was built between 1718 and 1723 under the supervision of the engineer John Hore of Newbury. The canal is administered by British Waterways. The lock has a rise/fall of 8 ft 11 in (2.72 m).[1]
