In 2009, because of financial constraints, TfL decided to stop work to provide step-free access at Osterley and five other stations, on the grounds that these are relatively quiet stations and some are already one or two stops away from an existing step-free station.[2] Osterley, for example, is one station away from Hounslow East where step-free access was provided in 2005[3].
The station has recently been rebuilt with a modern glass enclosed ticket hall on the south side of the tracks replacing the small 1909 station entrance located on the north side.
Hounslow Town station was opened by the Metropolitan District Railway (MDR, now the District Line) on 1 May 1883 as the terminus of a new extension of the MDR from Acton Town. The station was constructed with the intention of continuing the line south to join the tracks of the London and South Western Railway (L&SWR) close to Hounslow station. To facilitate this the tracks were built at an elevated level in readiness to cross the High Street via a bridge. The L&SWR objected to the MDR connecting to its tracks as the new MDR route to central London would compete with its own route to Waterloo and the extension was never undertaken.
On 24 September 1982, Bakerloo Line services to Harrow & Wealdstone ended when services north of Stonebridge Park were ended.[6] The closure was short-lived, and the Bakerloo Line to Harrow & Wealdstone was reinstated on 4 June 1984 with the station acting as the terminus.[6]
The London Underground service at Harrow-on-the-Hill is provided by the Metropolitan line. The adjacent Underground stations are (toward London) Northwick Park, (toward Amersham) North Harrow and (toward Uxbridge) West Harrow. The Metropolitan line operates a varied pattern of trains and not all trains stop at all stations. "Fast" and "semi-fast" services do not stop between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Finchley Road. The stations between Harrow and Wembley Park, and between Harrow and Moor Park have no platforms on the Fast Lines.
