Places of interest in Dartford, DA1
North End is an electoral ward in the London Borough of Bexley which consists of Slade Green, the eastern part of Erith and a tiny part of Barnehurst, along with parts of Northend. Community interests are represented by Slade Green Community Forum, which is a registered charity. There are approximately 4800 residences within the ward.
In early 2006 the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) purchased a 2.6 hectare site on the edge of the town which had been used by Unwins, an off licence chain that went into administration in 2005. They also purchased the neighbouring Matrix Business Centre to protect its future. They intend to develop the site as 'Dartford Northern Gateway' with a mixture of retail and other businesses and housing.
The M25 runs nearby and the A25 runs along through the town. The M25 can be accessed via either the A22 or the A21, although Westerham is signed frequently on the M25, the A233 does not have a junction with the M25.
Although the ground was regularly maintained, it changed little until the arrival of Redbridge Forest in 1990 to ground share. They paid for a new stand to be erected in the corner of the ground to increase the seating capacity and replaced the grass banking with concrete terracing. These improvements brought the ground up to the standard required by the Football Conference. Redbridge Forest and Dagenham merged in July 1992 and the ground improvements have continued right up to the present day. In 1995 they replaced the crumbling pitch perimeter wall with a new brick built one and two years later rebuilt the toilet block at the Victoria Road end of the ground. The club brought in Bill O'Neil from Atcost to design and build a new purpose built stand. The new 800-seater, which brings the seating capacity to over a thousand, was used for the first time for the Essex Senior Cup final against Canvey Island on 4 August 2001, twelve weeks after the old stand was last used. During summer 2001 new turnstile blocks were constructed and the eight floodlights were replaced with four corner ones.
Next door, the Heath Branch Public Library occupies the space where various outhouses and the kitchen garden would have been, and also the site of a later coach house. The library was opened on 16 July 1931, and artifacts in the Keats House collection were originally displayed in the front part of the building. Some of the artifacts were donated by Charles Armitage Brown's descendants in New Plymouth, New Zealand, the town to which Charles Brown emigrated in the last year of his life.[4]
