The place name Cranbrook derives from Old English cran broc, meaning Crane Marsh, marshy ground frequented by cranes (although more probably herons). Spelling of the place name has evolved over the centuries from Cranebroca (c. 1100); by 1226 it was recorded as Cranebroc, then Cranebrok. By 1610 the name had become Cranbrooke, which evolved into the current spelling.[1][2]
The typical off-peak service from the station is two trains per hour to Maidstone West, of which one train per hour is extended to Paddock Wood and Tonbridge, and two trains an hour to Strood. Connections to London are available from either Strood or Paddock Wood, or from Maidstone East, a short walk away.
Maidstone Hockey Club is one of the oldest field hockey clubs in the country, founded in 1878.[14] For the 2010/11 season, the Ladies' 1st XI play in the East Womens Premier League,[15] and the Men's 1st XI play in the South Hockey League 1st XI Premier League Division 1.[16] The Men's 1st squad are also represented in the Indoor England Hockey League Division 2 England Hockey League, having previously won the Division 2 title in 2008/09.[17][18] In total, the club has 7 men's sides and 4 women's sides playing at all levels of National, regional, and County leagues.
