Carisbrooke (Isle of Wight) railway stationCarisbrooke Station[1] was an intermediate [2] station on the Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway ,situated near the village of Carisbrooke [3] just outside Newport. It was a busy station for the nearby castle until the advent of the bus routes[4], but little used thereafter[5]. Closed in 1953[6]its goods yard was by then derelict and overgrown[7](its only recent use having been by prisoners during World War II [8]). The station has long been demolished and the site barely discernible within a school playing field[9].Newport, Isle of WightNewport is home to the Postal Museum, possibly the largest private collection of vintage postal equipment and post boxes in the world.[4][5]Carisbrooke CastleCarisbrooke was the strongest castle on the Island, though it does not dominate the countryside like many other castles.Lake, Isle of WightThe village war memorial has been relocated behind the Fairway Bus Shelter due to having been run down twice by carelessly driven lorries. A large public park called Los Altos starts at the boundary between Lake and Sandown. Local wildlife includes Pipstrelle bats at Los Altos, kestrels along the Cliff Path and Common Toads which spawn in the disused reservoir behind the Mall. Sandown & Shanklin Golf Course is behind the High School and the Rugby Club in front. The wetlands of the River Yar are an SSSI supporting newts, voles and wildfowl. Recent improvements have overcome the problem of persistent flooding near the Co-Op, caused by rainwater run-off from Lake Hill and the Mall.Brading DownParts of the down are private, including an area used as a covered reservoir, and some for agriculture. But much of the down, some 35 hectares (86 acres), is open to the public and is owned by the Isle of Wight Council. The main area of Brading Down is fenced and grazed but access on foot and for horse riders is available from the many pathways entering the area, and the car parks bordering the main Newport to Brading Road.Information by Wikipedia.com
