Carisbrooke (Isle of Wight) railway station

Carisbrooke Station[1] was an intermediate [2] station on the Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport Railway ,situated near the village of Carisbrooke [3] just outside Newport. It was a busy station for the nearby castle until the advent of the bus routes[4], but little used thereafter[5]. Closed in 1953[6]its goods yard was by then derelict and overgrown[7](its only recent use having been by prisoners during World War II [8]). The station has long been demolished and the site barely discernible within a school playing field[9].

Carisbrooke Castle

The site of Carisbrooke Castle may have been occupied in pre-Roman times. The existence of a ruined wall suggests that there was a building there in late Roman times. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle mentions that Wihtgar, nephew of king Cynric, died in AD 544, and was buried there. The Jutes may have taken over the fort by the late 7th century. An Anglo-Saxon stronghold occupied the site during the 8th century. Around 1000, a wall was built around the hill as a defence against Viking raids.

Newport, Isle of Wight

There are signs of Roman settlement in the area, which was probably known as Medina, including two known Roman villas one of which, Newport Roman Villa, is excavated and open to the public.[1]
