Liphook is located on both the main road (A3) and rail (Portsmouth Direct Line) links between London and Portsmouth. Liphook is served by Liphook railway station. Liphook is now (April 2010) part of the parliamentary constituency of East Hampshire. Its Member of Parliament is Damien Hinds, a member of the Conservative Party.
In 1397 Richard II and the Bishop of Salisbury confirmed an order dated the 29th April 1221 allowing an annual fair to be held in the town. The first ever recorded fair was held in the year 1394 and the latest to date was held 3 May 2010. It ceased to be a yearly event some time ago, but was reinsteted in 1984 and now runs every two years.[citation needed]
Sometimes known as Hydon Ball, or Cup Hill, it is now in the care of the National Trust. At its highest point is a large stone seat which was placed there in 1915 as a memorial to Octavia Hill, one of the Trust's founders.
The tower of St Mary's was added in 1932 - again from local sandstone - and it became the Parish Church in 1959. In the 1940s and 50's it was often described locally and unflatteringly as the "stump".
