Places of interest in Moffat, DG10
10 miles (16 km) to the north of the village in the neighbouring administrative area of South Lanarkshire is Beattock Summit, which at 315 m (1033 ft) is the highest point on both the M74, and on the WCML in Scotland. The village was once given importance as steam trains needed to attach a banker locomotive from Beattock engine shed to the rear to assist them by pushing their heavy trains up the daunting incline that is Beattock bank. This was itself made famous in the poem by W H Auden written in 1936 specifically for use by the GPO Film Unit, when it was set to music by Benjamin Britten. The poem is called Night Mail.
Moffat (from the Scottish Gaelic: Am Magh Fada) is a former burgh and spa town in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, lying on the River Annan, with a population of around 2,500. The most notable building in the town is the Moffat House Hotel, designed by John Adam. The nearby Star Hotel, a mere 20 ft (6 m) wide, boasted a record in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat also won the famous "Britain In Bloom" contest in 1996. Moffat is also the home to the well known Moffat toffee.
The bridge built by the Romans outlasted them by many centuries. It was rebuilt on the original Roman foundations some time before 1300, and in 1597 it was rebuilt again, this time with a third arch added on the east side of the river. The Old Bridge is also known as the Roman Bridge and remains in use today by pedestrians. To its north is the New Bridge, designed by John Rennie the Elder and built in 1806. This in turn was considerably widened in 1925.
Management of the observatory was transferred to Paisley District Council in 1963 and is now operated by Renfrewshire Council.
Paisley is connected to the UK motorway network with the M8 running along the northern edge of the town. This forms part of the unsigned E05 Euroroute from Greenock to Gibraltar. Many major A roads converge through the town including the A726, A737 and A761.
