Stockton-on-Tees is a market town in North East England. It is the major settlement in the unitary authority area and borough of Stockton-on-Tees. For ceremonial purposes, the borough is split between County Durham and North Yorkshire as it also incorporates a number of smaller towns including Billingham, Yarm and Thornaby. The combined size of the borough equates to approx 180,000 people and makes it larger than Middlesbrough in terms of population and area.
The museum is owned and operated by Angus Council and admission is free of change. Disabled access is difficult due to the design of the building and lighthouse style spiral main staircase. The building is quite prominent and is accessed from the main A92 dual carriageway running through the town. Reaching the museum from the railway station is by foot and will take around 10 minutes. The Signal Tower is well sign posted throughout the town. Cyclists might like to note that the main Arbroath to Dundee cycle path runs past the front door.
Arbroath was the location of the Battle of Arbroath in 1446. A series of disagreements between the Chief Justiciary of Arbroath, Alexander Lindsay, third Earl of Crawford, and Bishop James Kennedy of St Andrews resulted in Lindsay sacking the bishop's lands and burning his properties. Lindsay was excommunicated for his troubles and it was felt that this was incompatible with his role as Chief Justiciary. The monks of Arbroath Abbey selected Alexander Ogilvy of Inverquharity as his replacement and the insult led to pitched battle in the town, leaving 500 dead, including Lindsay and Ogilvy. Large parts of the town were destroyed in the aftermath by the Lindsay family.[23]
Gosforth Park is also home to Gosforth Park Nature Reserve, a private SSSI managed by the Natural History Society of Northumbria.
