Ayr railway station

Ayr station consists of two through platforms, and two bay platforms to the north.[2] The northbound platform station building is located on the ground floor of the four-storey hotel attached to the station, and the southbound platform has a large single storey sandstone building.[2] The glazed canopy that covers a small section of all four platforms and the waiting area was originally much larger than its current size.[2]

Ayr

During the 14th century Ayr flourished. A new settlement grew up across the River Ayr at Newton. While in the 13th century, the houses in Ayr were made of wood, some richer citizens began rebuilding their houses in stone in the 15th century. The Tolbooth was built in the early 15th century, and in the late 15th century the Auld Brig was rebuilt.

Kilmarnock

The town is host to Kilmarnock F.C., a member of the SPL and the second oldest professional football club in Scotland.[19] Their home ground is Rugby Park. The irregular etymology of the ground is that when founded, the club played both football and rugby. The club has the largest supporter base of any team outside Scotland's four major cities.[citation needed] Rugby Park was also one of the first football grounds in Scotland to have floodlights installed. In recent years the stadium has been modernised, firstly to bring it in line with the all-seating regulations, then rebuilt totally to make a new ground. It has also hosted international football matches and music concerts, most recently Elton John in June 2005.
