Ardrossan Montgomerie Pier railway station

The station opened on 30 May 1890 as Ardrossan Pier,[1] replacing the L&AR Ardrossan station as the new terminus for the line in Ardrossan (although that station would continue to operate as an intermediate station). It was closed from 1 January 1917 to 1 February 1919 due to wartime economy,[1][2] and upon the grouping of the L&AR into the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1923, the station was renamed Ardrossan Montgomerie Pier on 2 June 1924.[1] The name change was to avoid confusion with the nearby G&SWR station of the same name, which was also incorporated into the LMS. Montgomerie Pier survived the former L&AR station closures of 1932,[3].

Ardrossan North railway station

Today parts of the station platforms are still in existence, though heavily overgrown. The site of the station building is now occupied by the depot for Clyde Coast Coaches.[4] The bridge that passed over the station was demolished in March 2008 and platforms underneath partially removed.[citation needed]

Ardrossan Castle

The castle remained until 1648, when Oliver Cromwell's troops destroyed it, removing much of the stone and taking it to Ayr to build a fort there. The ruins of the castle still stand, but are in hazardous condition.

Stewarton

The War Memorial used to stand outside the front of the library in the avenue square and was moved to provide a more suitable setting near Standalane house above Lainshaw primary school.

Lady's Well

In 1879 David Landsborough describes the local wells and springs, including the Monk's Well, but makes no reference to a Lady's Well.[2] John Smith in the 1890s [3] refers to the Monk's well rather than Lady's Well. In 1912, Duncan McNaught[1] the local schoolmaster stated that the "Lady's Well" is an old well, arched over, which provided the water supply for the buildings associated with the collegiate church. Robert Beattie in 1993 saw the well as being associated with the old collegiate church.[4][5]
