Places of interest in Montrose, DD11
Originally built in 1813 as a base of operations for the famous Bell Rock Lighthouse, the Signal Tower housed the families of the keepers stationed on the 'rock', along with the vital shore staff who ran the tender. The name Signal Tower comes from the signalling apparatus installed atop of the tower building that was used to communicate between the shore staff (the Master Of The Tender) and the keepers of the lighthouse. An identical set of signalling apparatus is installed atop the lighthouse itself. Installed within the Signal Tower was a small observatory outfitted with a powerful telescope; it was through this telescope that the signalling apparatus on the lighthouse was monitored during the day. In an age before wireless communications, the ball system employed by the Bell Rock was seen as state of the art technology. At night, any fluctuation to the light would see the supply vessel set sail for the 'rock' to investigate.
There are several amateur theatre and musical companies based in and around Arbroath, the best known being the Angus Minstrels group, the last group in Britain to regularly perform blackface. In 2005, following pressure from Angus Council, who feared legal action, the show began performing with normal stage makeup, and the group changed its name from 'The Angus Black and White Minstrels' to simply 'The Angus Minstrels'. The decision to stop performing the show in blackface received widespread press coverage in the UK.[72][73]
In August 2009, Kirkcaldy High was reported to have had posted record exam results by the Fife Free Press. They stated that "KHS had seen significant rises in pass rates among S4 pupils, and the percentage of students achieving five or more Standard Grades exceeded the national average. Numbers of those gaining Foundation, General and Credit passes all rose, with an average increase of 13 per cent.[4]
For the purposes of management individual subject departments have been consolidated into 10 faculties:
Today, Kirkcaldy remains a busy town for the surrounding areas. The town is home to a Museum and Art Gallery; two public parks and shopping facilities in the town centre and Sinclairtown.[6] The town also hosts the annual Links Market commonly known as Europe's longest street fair.[27][28] The production of linoleum still continues to this day, despite being on a vastly reduced scale and now in Swiss ownership.[6] The company which later became 'Forbo-Nairn', diversified into the production of vinyl floor tiles and speciality, marmoleum since 1994.[10][29]
