However, the town's earliest known charter dates from 1558, with its modern development taking place after the building of the Aberdeenshire Canal linking Port Elphinstone with Aberdeen Harbour in 1806. The Inverurie Locomotive Works (1905?1969) led to a modest increase in size and prosperity, but it was not until the "Oil Boom" of the last quarter of the 20th century that the town developed into much of its present form.
Immediately adjacent to the mouth of the river, is Methil power station, which is now unused and awaiting deconstruction. However, one of the energy producing wind turbines planned for the area might provide an alternative visual reference point, both from the Forth Estuary and from inland approaches to Methil, conveniently replacing Methil Power Station Chimney.
Until 1832, this was the only access to the city from the south. The bridge still features the original 16th-century piers, coats of arms and passing places.[4]
Allan Park is a football ground located in Cove, a suburb of Aberdeen. It is home to Cove Rangers F.C., who currently play in the Highland Football League. The ground has a capacity of 2300 spectators, with 200 on seats or benches.
The station was once a terminus of a branch line, which ran through the land now occupied by Glenrothes between Leslie and Markinch. The line was closed to passengers in 1935, but remained open to freight until 1967. The former branchline now forms part of the Fife Cycle Network and has been named Böblingen Way, after Glenrothes' German Twin Town. Another section of the branch line which linked to Tullis Russell paper mill was still in use until the early 1990s, but this has now also been removed and converted into a cycleway linking to Glenrothes.
