The station was rebuilt in the early 1970s to a contemporary functional style (see picture, right). The tracks are above street level and access to the six platforms is via a subway and stairs. Recently the goods lifts were modified to allow public access.
On Sundays there is an hourly service to Southport and Stockport via Bolton & Manchester Piccadilly (with two-hourly extensions to Chester via Altrincham) but no trains to Kirkby. Passengers for Manchester Victoria formerly had to change trains at Bolton or Salford Crescent as there was no service on the Atherton line.
This situation changed in May 2010 when a 12 month trial of an hourly Sunday service began between Wallgate and Manchester Victoria via Atherton (after Greater Manchester PTA agreed a funding package with train operator Northern Rail in December 2009[1]). GMPTE hope to have the Sunday service become a requirement of the Northern refranchising from September 2013.
At the Norman Conquest, the settlement of Wigan was part of the larger parish of Wigan which, the majority of which was within the hundred of Newton.[31] On 26 August 1246, Wigan was granted a Royal Charter, making the town a free borough.[8] This happened after Salford was granted its Charter in 1230 and before Manchester in 1301.[1][32] As a borough, Wigan was represented in the Model Parliament from 1295?1306 by two burgesses ? freemen of the borough.[33] The Charter allowed taxes to be made on transactions made in the borough by tradesmen and permitted the local burgesses to establish a guild that would regulate trade in the borough. Non-members of the guild were not allowed to do business in the borough without permission from the burgesses.[8] It is thought that when the Charter was reconfirmation in 1350 it was changed, allowing the election of a mayor of Wigan for the first time. Three burgesses were elected to be presented to the lord of the manor who would choose one man to be mayor for a year.[8]
Preston (pronounced /ˈprɛstən/ ) is a city and non-metropolitan district in Lancashire, England. It is located on the north bank of the River Ribble, and was granted city status in 2002, becoming England\'s 50th city in the 50th year of Queen Elizabeth II\'s reign.Preston has a population of 131,900, and lies at the centre of the wider Preston sub-area, which has a population of 184,836, and the Central Lancashire sub-region, with a population of 335,000.
Widnes Football Club had a number of grounds before settling at Lowerhouse Lane in 1884/85 on a site a few hundred yards north of the current location. That land was leased on behalf of the rugby organisation by Widnes Cricket Club but, to coincide with the breakaway from the Rugby Football Union in 1895, Widnes FC obtained a lease for land on which they laid out a new ground (the Naughton Park/Stobart Stadium site). The first game on the new field was against Liversedge on 12 October 1895.
