Wigan rugby league team became sub-tenants of Springfield Park (which they shared with Wigan United who had playing preference) playing their first game there on 14 September 1901. A crowd of 4,123 saw them beat Morecambe 12-0. Wigan rugby league team's record crowd at Springfield was 10,111 when they beat Widnes on 19 March 1902. The last game was on 28 April 1902 when Wigan beat the Rest of Lancashire Senior Competition. Wigan then relocated to Central Park.
On the outskirts of the town of Wigan, Greater Manchester, the semi-rural Gathurst is a recently refurbished two-platform station on the Southport line 5 km (2¾ miles) north west of Wigan Wallgate station. The station also serves the nearby village of Shevington, indeed until 1973 (see British Rail Timetable of 1972) was named Gathurst for Shevington.
The school has a strong sporting tradition, particularly in Rugby League. In the late 1990s and early 2000s one years' team went unbeaten for 5 years, earning a place in the Guinness Book of Records. The schools sporting alumni include Wigan Rugby League players Shaun Edwards and Billy Joe Edwards, the latter of whom was tragically killed in a traffic accident in 2003.[1] Current Wigan Rugby League players Joel Tomkins, Sam Tomkins, Chris Ashton Sean O'Loughlin also attended the school.
Lilford is a district in the town of Leigh, Greater Manchester.
From northwards clockwise, it borders the parishes of Croft (at a point on a motorway junction), Birchwood, Woolston, the unparished area of Warrington, then the parish of Winwick.
