Places of interest in Salford, M6
Salford may refer to:
In 1900, Salford agreed a 14-year lease on 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land belonging to the Willows Estate Company, named after the abundance of willow trees in the area. They made their debut at The Willows on 21 December, 1901, beating Swinton 2-0 in front of 16,981 fans.
19th century cotton firm Ermen & Engels ? part-owned by the father of Friedrich Engels ? established their second factory in 1837 near Weaste Station, on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway line. A young Friedrich worked for the factory in their offices based around the Royal Exchange, Manchester.
The viaduct was built by contractors for the Manchester, Bury and Rossendale Railway, to carry trains across the River Irwell on the Clifton Junction to Bury line. It is 340 feet (100 m) long, and carries the line 70 feet (21 m) above the Irwell. The inaugural date for the timber structure was 25 September 1846[1]. The superstructure was converted to cast iron in 1881 by Handyside and Company of Derby.[2]. The London, Midland and Scottish Railway replaced the timber decking in 1923.[3]
The colliery, which covers 13 hectares (0.050 sq mi), was transferred from the ownership of British Coal Property to Bury Council in October 1997. The council intended to turn the site ? consisting mostly of contaminated land covered with collapsed buildings, spoil heaps, and uncapped mineshafts ? into open land suitable for public use as part of their Outwood Forest Park project. Converting the site cost about £600,000. The colliery is now the main entrance to Outwood Forest Park and is part of the Irwell Sculpture Trail.[8]
