Preston (pronounced /Ë?prÉ?stÉ?n/ (listen)) is a city and non-metropolitan district in Lancashire, England. It is located on the north bank of the River Ribble, and was granted city status in 2002, becoming England's 50th city in the 50th year of Queen Elizabeth II's reign.[1] Preston has a population of 131,900, and lies at the centre of the wider Preston sub-area, which has a population of 184,836, and the Central Lancashire sub-region, with a population of 335,000.[2]
St John Fisher Catholic High School is a mixed comprehensive secondary school located in Beech Hill, Wigan, Greater Manchester. It is named after the Catholic martyr John Fisher.
October 19th, 1966 marked the first floodlit match at Springfield Park, when Wigan Athletic played Crewe Alexandra. This was a full year before floodlights were installed at Central Park.
Sundays the eastbound service goes instead to Stockport via Manchester Piccadilly, with alternate trains continuing to Altrincham and Chester.
The town's tram, trolleybus and bus fleet was always painted in crimson and off-white colours, with ornate gold lining out until the outbreak of World War 2. The buses were notable in that they never carried exterior advertisements, with the town's crest occupying the space between decks where other bus operators placed adverts; and they carried two green lights on the front, to enable the town's ratepayers to see at night which was one of the town's own buses and not one of those of a competitor.[111] At local government reorganisation in April 1974, the Wigan Corporation Transport Department became part of Greater Manchester Transport.[112] The former Corporation tram/bus garage in Melverley Street is still in use by First Manchester.
