In 1963 the council booked The Beatles to play at the Urmston Show at Abbotsfield Park in Chassen Road on Monday 5 August. At the time of the booking, The Beatles were not well known, but had risen in popularity by the time of their appearance.[39]David Hamilton who was the compere for which he received ten guineas (£10.50) commented: "The boys were smuggled in in a van ... screaming girls rushed the stage, trying to get hold of their idols ... it was certainly a hard day's night."[39]
The Barton Swing Aqueduct is a moveable aqueduct in Barton upon Irwell in Greater Manchester, England. It carries the Bridgewater Canal across the Manchester Ship Canal, the swinging action allows large vessels using the Manchester Ship Canal to pass underneath and smaller narrowboats to cross over the top. The aqueduct is a Grade II* listed building[1] and is considered a major feat of Victorian civil engineering.[1][2] Designed by Sir Edward Leader Williams and built by Andrew Handyside of Derby, it opened in 1894 and remains in regular use.
In response to the closure of those footpaths the people of Flixton initiated and funded a court case against Ralph Wright, one of the first footpath battles in England.[1]
