The closest station was Radcliffe Bridge, heading southwest to Clifton the following station was Ringley Road.
Outwood Colliery was a coal mine in Outwood, near Stoneclough then in historic county of Lancashire, England. Originally named Clough Side Colliery,[1] it opened in the 1840s and was the largest colliery in the area[2] It was owned by Thomas Fletcher & Sons, Outwood Collieries, Stoneclough, Manchester.[3] There were two pits. Coal was transported by a tramway to a depot west of Outwood Road, in Radcliffe, and also by tramway through Ringley Wood to the nearby Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal. A railway sidings from the nearby East Lancashire Railway Line was located nearby, from the northern end of the colliery. In its heyday the colliery employed over 2000 workers.[4] Outwood Colliery exploited the coal seams of the Manchester Coalfield and was noted for its Trencherbone Coal.[5]
In May 1926, The Times reported that the cost of generation per unit of electricity was .25d (approximately £0.001 today), the cost per unit sold being .483d (approximately £0.002). The station had delivered 125,727,060 units of electricity.[3]
Walsden's name is of Anglo-Saxon origin meaning "Valley of Foreigner" or "Valley of he who is Foreign". Foreign refers to the Celtic Britons who lived in West Yorkshire at the time of the Anglo Saxon Petty Kingdoms. It has been said in the past that it comes from "Wolves' Den" but this has been dismissed as the "den" in Walsden almost certainly refers to the valley.[citation needed]
