Barrow-in-FurnessIn the Middle Ages the Furness peninsula was controlled by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of St Mary of Furness, known as Furness Abbey. This was located in the 'Vale of Nightshade', now on the outskirts of the town.[6] Originally founded for the Savigniac order, it was built on the orders of King Stephen of England in 1123. Soon after the abbey's foundation the monks discovered iron ore deposits, later to prove the basis for the Furness economy. These thin strata, close to the surface, were extracted through open cut workings,[7] which were then smelted by the monks in small bloomeries (early furnaces).[8] The proceeds from mining, along with agriculture and fisheries, meant that by the 15th century the abbey had become the second richest and most powerful Cistercian abbey in England, after Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire.[9]BAE Systems Submarine SolutionsBAE Systems Submarine Solutions is a wholly owned subsidiary of BAE Systems, based in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and is responsible for the development and production of submarines.Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering LtdThe ex-Vickers yard at Barrow was the first shipyard of the British Shipbuilders group to return to the private sector. It was sold, together with Cammell Laird, in March 1986 to an employee-led company, VSEL Consortium. The company was floated on the London Stock Exchange in December 1986.[4]BlackburnClosures continued in the 1960s with, for example, the Parkside, Fountains, Malvern and Pioneer Mills shutting in 1964.[41] In 1967 the Eclipse Mill at Feniscowles closed, unable to compete with imported cloth sold at nine pence cheaper per yard than the mill could produce it. By the end of that year there were 26 mills left operating in Blackburn.[42] The 1970s saw further closures, and the number of textile workers in Blackburn reduced to 6,000 by January 1975, the year in which the Albion and Alston mills also stopped production with the loss of a further 400 jobs.[32][43] The following statistic gives some idea of the rate of decline of Blackburn's cotton industry: in 1976 there were 2,100 looms still operating, from a peak of 79,405 in 1907.[44]Blackburn CathedralFurther work was carried out in 2000?1 to re-build the east end roofs and parapets and blend them into the existing structures. Upon completion of this work the cathedral was finally deemed to be finished after over 70 years of construction.Information by Wikipedia.com
