Millom Rugby League Club, based here, is the oldest existing amateur rugby league club in the world having been founded in 1873. Millom also has a successful Rugby Union Football Team, who train and play at Haverigg. They currently play in the Cumbrian League.
Public houses and inns flourished early on in Poulton due to its status as a market town.[86] One of the most important inns was the Golden Ball, which probably dates from the 18th century.[86] It was also the meeting place of the local court, and at the end of the 19th century the town's cattle market was moved behind the pub from the market place.[86] The Thatched House pub existed in 1793 and may have been built in the Middle Ages.[86] It was rebuilt in 1910 in the Mock Tudor style and has been identified as one of the town's "key landmarks" by the Poulton Market Town Initiative. In the 19th century the Ship Inn was a rowdy pub popular with Fleetwood seamen, travelling labourers and locals.[87] In the 1920s it became a working men's club and from 1928?2001, a conservative club.[87] It is an Edwardian building constructed in red brick with red sandstone dressings. It has a corner tower and the walls have carvings of ships.[88] It is now a pub and nightclub called The Cube.[89]
Before the 19th century the area was sparsely populated. Horse races organised for the Earls of Derby on the sands at Leasowe in the 16th and 17th centuries are regarded as forerunners of the modern Derby.[2]
It lies east of the town centre on the A572 road to Newton-le-Willows.
Clock Face was once served by the St Helens and Runcorn Gap Railway at Clock Face station on Gartons Lane. The area is currently served by Lea Green railway station on the northern route of the Liverpool to Manchester Line. Arriva North West operate bus services in Clock Face, routes 32/32A/32C and 33/33A link the area to St Helens Hospital and the Town Centre as well as routes 121/122 (replacing 32A) in the evenings. Other bus companies serving the area include Merseytravel's 140 and 265 bus routes, Halton Transport's 17/17A/17B bus routes and Strawberry Bus' Line 1 bus route.
