When the canal reopened, the channel was diverted slightly to the east to avoid the substation compound. However, its way was obstructed by a pylon, and it had to pass between the pylon's legs [1].
As Stayley expanded in the 18th century, it reached the banks of the River Tame. The construction of a bridge in 1707 meant the settlement was now commonly referred to as Stalybridge, meaning the bridge at Stayley.[8] By the mid-18th century Stalybridge had a population of just 140. Farming and woollen spinning were the main means subsistence at this time.
Stalybridge railway station serves Stalybridge, Greater Manchester. It lies on the Huddersfield Line 12 km (7½ miles) east of Manchester Piccadilly and 13 km (8¼ miles) east of Manchester Victoria. The station is managed by First TransPennine Express.
In 1920 Lower Higham Farm and all its land was purchased by the War Memorial Committee of the Hyde Borough Council in 1920, and in 1921 Hyde's main war memorial was officially unveiled.[7] A Royal Observer Corps monitoring post was active here from 1962 to 1968,[8] it was intended to give warning of hostile aircraft and nuclear attacks on the United Kingdom.[9] In the late 1980s, Greater Manchester Council, Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council and the Hyde War Memorial Trust worked together to establish Werneth Low country park which covers 80 hectares (200 acres); the park was officially opened in 1980.[7]
Alder Community High School is a state funded high school in Hyde, Greater Manchester which has specialist status in Mathematics and Computing. The School was built under the Private Funding Initiative (PFI), a major government investment programme designed to bring Britain's secondary schools into the 21st Century. Alder replaced Hattersley High School, which was demolished as part of improvements to the Hattersley area.
