The Wardle canal is the shortest canal in the UK at 154 feet (47 m).[1]
The earliest evidence of anyone living in the area is the piece of a Saxon stone cross, which was found between the World Wars when St Chad's Church was altered. The fragment is on display near the organ today. St Chad was the first bishop of the Midlands in the 7th Century. There are various churches dedicated to him in Cheshire and throughout the Midlands. As it is recorded that he travelled around converting the pagans, it is possible that he converted early converts in a spring in what might have been a sacred valley at the edge of the forest. The ancient churchyard of the St Chad's church still shows a circular shape, which is usually a clue to an ancient, and often Pre-Christian, foundation. No church however is mentioned in the written records before the time of the Normans.
There is angling at Meadow View, Whitbarrow Road, Statham, where there are three man-made lakes stocked with a variety of fish. Angling is represented in Lymm by Lymm Angling Club.[16]
Scenes from the George C. Scott film Patton were filmed in the centre of Knutsford, in front of the old Town Hall.[17] The building was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, and it is now a furniture sale room.[18]
Knutsford station opened to passengers on 12 May 1862 with a service between Knutsford and Altrincham. Trains to Northwich commenced from 1 January 1863. Services were operated by CLC until nationalisation on 1 January 1948. Passengers numbers at Knutsford are currently increasing by as much as 27% per annum.[1] Knutsford is also the most used station between Mouldsworth and Navigation Road (not including Metrolink figures at Altrincham and Navigation Road.)
