Haltwhistle was a market town for the exchange of local goods. In the eighteenth century two Quakers set up a baize manufactury and there was a weaving establishment. On the Haltwhistle Burn were fulling mills, dyeing and spinning mills. A walk along this stream to the Roman Wall, shows that it must have been a hive of industry with quarries, coal mining and lime burning kilns. The Directory of 1822 (Pigot) gives a whole range of craftsmen, shopkeepers and traders ? 60 in number, including makers of clogs. The weekly market was held on Thursdays and there were fairs on May 14 and November 22 for cattle and sheep.[2]
Bishop Auckland College (formerly Bishop Auckland Technical College) is a further education college located in the town of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. It is located on Woodhouse Lane next to St John's RC Comprehensive School with Bishop Barrington School (now Bishop Barrington Sports with Mathematics College) opposite the aforementioned school.
Bishop Barrington School is a co-educational comprehensive school in the town of Bishop Auckland, Co Durham, England. The school has around 700 students and is a specialist Sports College and Mathematics and Computing College. It was established in 1810 in the town's market place[1] and named after, the then Bishop of Durham, Shute Barrington[2], who was a notable patron of education. St John's RC Comprehensive School is a voluntary aided Roman Catholic Comprehensive school in the town of Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. The school is a specialist technology college. The school currently has around 1300 pupils between the ages of 11 and 18, making it the town's largest secondary school. The school opened in 1964 and is located on Woodhouse Lane next to Bishop Auckland College and opposite Bishop Barrington School.
Before the middle part of the Victorian era, when coal mining was at its height in County Durham, Cornforth was in the parish of Bishop Middleham.
