On Friday 1 April 1949, Norman Collins, then the Controller of the BBC Television Service, announced at the Television Society's annual dinner at the Waldorf Hotel that a new TV centre would be built in Shepherd's Bush. Transmissions at the time came from Alexandra Palace and Lime Grove Studios (from 1949), and had very few television transmitters. It was to be the largest television centre in the world. Riverside Studios in Hammersmith were used from 1954.

In the summer of 1994 the Loftus Road ground became an all-seater stadium with the construction of seating in the lower Loftus Road stand. The last match where home spectators were able to watch the match from terracing was 16 April 1994 against Everton.
While tunnels to the later Heathrow Terminal 5 station were under construction the loop and Terminal 4 station closed on 7 January 2005 and the tube service reverted to its previous two-way running between Hatton Cross and the Terminal 1, 2, 3 station; a shuttle bus from Hatton Cross was provided for passengers for Terminal 4. Service round the loop restarted on 17 September 2006.
In contrast to the Heathrow Express, London Underground services do not provide free transfer between terminals. Passengers using the Piccadilly Line to travel from Terminal 4 to Terminals 1, 2, 3 would need to purchase a ticket, and no direct services exist in the other direction. Airline passengers connecting between terminals at Heathrow can travel free of charge on the Heathrow Connect to Heathrow Central (Terminals 1, 2, 3).
