Places of interest in Greenwich, SE10
Georgian and Victorian architecture dominates in the town centre which spreads to the west of the park and Royal Naval college. Much of this forms a one-way system around a covered market, Greenwich Market and the arthouse Greenwich Cinema. Up the hill, from the centre there are many streets of Georgian houses, including the world's only museum dedicated to fans, the Fan Museum, on Croom's Hill. Nearby at the junction of Croom's Hill with Nevada Street, is Greenwich Theatre, formerly Crowder's Music Hall - one of two Greenwich theatres, the other being the Greenwich Playhouse.
The grounds behind the Queen's House will be used to house a stadium for the equestrian events of the Olympic Games to be held in London in 2012.[11] The modern pentathlon will also be staged in the grounds of Greenwich Park. The Queen's House itself will be used as a VIP centre for the games. Work to prepare the Queen's House will involve some internal re-modelling and work on the lead roof to prepare it for security and camera installations.
The Isaac Newton Telescope was built at Herstmonceux in 1967, but was moved to Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in Spain's Canary Islands in 1979. In 1990 the RGO moved again, to Cambridge. Following a decision of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council, it closed in 1998. Her Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office was transferred to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory after the closure. Other work went to the UK Astronomy Technology Centre in Edinburgh. The castle grounds are now the home of the International Study Centre of Queen's University, Kingston, Canada and the Observatory Science Centre.
HMP Brixton's primary role is to serve the local magistrates courts, as well as Inner London Crown Courts in holding remand and trial prisoners. Accommodation at Brixton comprises four main residential units, plus a health care unit. A new Kitchen is currently being built and plans are in discussion to replace the Reception, Healthcare, & Sports complex.
It is home to the Lambeth Country Show every July[3] and an annual fireworks display around November 5.[4]
