From November 2006, in the face of a vigorous local campaign of opposition, Newham Council has proposed a redevelopment of the existing market site, including a supermarket and luxury housing above a much smaller covered market.[2]
Former chairman Eggert Magnússon made clear his ambition for West Ham United to move to the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Olympics. In 2009 club CEO Scott Duxbury revealed, in an interview with a West Ham fan website, that there was planning permission to expand the East Stand to take capacity to over 40,000.[8] In 2010 club owners David Gold and David Sullivan made it public they intend West Ham to move to the Olympic stadium after the 2012 Olympics.[9] On 30 September 2010, the club formally submitted its bid for the Olympic Stadium with a presentation at 10 Downing Street,[10] and on 8 October 2010 the world's largest live entertainment company Live Nation endorsed the club's Olympic Stadium plans.[11] Three days after Live Nation's endorsement UK Athletics confirmed its formal support for West Ham United and Newham Council in their joint bid to take over the Olympic Stadium in legacy mode.[12] In November 2010 West Ham United commenced a search for potential developers for informal discussions about what would happen to the ground if it wins its bid to take over the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Games. According to the club, the site could be vacated and open to redevelopment by the summer of 2014. [5]
Near Upton Park tube station, the road becomes a regional centre for retail in food, jewellery, fabrics and the location of Queens Road Market. The road has an array of shops specialising in primarily Pakistani goods, catering to those with strong cultural and familial ties to Pakistan. The street has a smaller yet prominent Afro-Caribbean community culture, reflected in its several food stores specialising in Caribbean and African foods.
The Wimbledon Post is another local newspaper published weekly.
In the 19th century, the Australian cricket team would stay at the Cricketers pub which overlooks the green and practise on the green whilst on tour. The pub also held the changing rooms for the club during the late 18th century, with the scorer having a position on the balcony of the inn. The present pavilion was built in 1904 and is unique in being the only cricket pavilion to be separated from the ground by a road, (the A239). [2]
